The transition from line officer to supervisor can be one of the most difficult challenges any law enforcement leader will face. This course will provide the skills necessary to effectively begin your leadership career with confidence and exceed the demands of the new direct leader in any law enforcement agency. The course is designed for newly promoted and soon-to-be promoted sworn and non-sworn members of the Indiana law enforcement community, current supervisors, and other organizational leaders.
Taught by the Institute for Law Enforcement Administration and facilitated by some of Indiana’s most successful police chiefs, the course delivers critical leadership principles and provides opportunities for you to apply new skills in real-world situations. The course is arranged into eight sections, including:
- Leadership 101. Learn basic leadership theory for police officers.
- Know Yourself. Develop a leadership style based on your personality & strengths.
- Know Your Department. Understand, build, and motivate strong teams.
- Plan & Execute Your Vision. Practice strategic planning and execute your vision.
- Coach Your Team. Hone your coaching skills.
- Manage Conflict. Understand conflict & develop conflict management skills.
- Emphasize Ethics. Recognize ethical challenges & lead ethical teams.
- Overcome Issues. Understand major leadership issues such as sexual harassment, bullying, and diversity.
As you move through the course, you’ll receive personalized counseling and one-on-one feedback from police chiefs around the state of Indiana, including:
Chief Bryan Shearer, Ligonier Police Department. A 1995 graduate of Vincennes University, Chief Shearer is a past President of the Northeast Indiana Training Council and the current President of the Indiana Association of Police Chiefs Foundation. He holds the positions of Chief of Police and Public Safety Director for the city of Ligonier.
Chief Brett Sprinkle, Newburgh Police Department. A member of the Indiana Integrated Public Safety Commission, Chief Sprinkle is a graduate of the FBI National Academy (Class 219), a Firearms Instructor, and a certified Advanced Computer Voice Stress Analyzer (CVSA) Operator. He also served as a certified D.A.R.E. instructor.
Chief Jason Dombkowski, West Lafayette Police Department. A 21-year law enforcement veteran, Chief Dombkowski is a graduate of Northwestern’s School of Police Staff and Command and the F.B.I. National Academy. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees for the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute by appointment of the Governor and on the Governor’s Council on Impaired Driving.
Chief Kevin Jowitt, Noblesville Police Department. A graduate of the FBI’s Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar, Chief Jowett is is a retired division commander from the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office and the former chief of the Westfield Police Department. He has an MS in Criminal Justice and Public Safety and a BS in business from Indiana University.
